Are Orthopedic Dog Beds Really Beneficial for My Dog or Just a Sales Gimmick?
There is quite a bit of evidence that orthopedic dog beds are very beneficial in promoting a healthy skeletal system in your dog as well as providing a sleeping platform that puts less stress on the joints of older dogs and dogs recovering from accidents. The memory foam that is normally used as the cushion of an orthopedic dog bed, was actually developed by NASA to support the bodies of astronauts during extended space flight. If it's good enough for American astronauts, then in my opinion, it's good enough for my best four-legged friend!
Some dog beds of this type also provide heat, as this increases the comfort level and it reduces pain if your pet is experiencing back and/or joint difficulties due to old age or injury. This is especially helpful in the colder times of the year. Not all orthopedic dog beds come with this feature, so if heat is a desirable option, make sure it is clearly indicated on the feature list of the product(s) you are considering.
There are other choices you have when considering an orthopedic dog bed. The style and size can be selected from a variety of choices. The sizes normally range from small to extra-large (I have even seen a few represented as super extra-large...must be one huge puppy!). The shapes and styles that I have seen are listed below, many of them in combinations:
• Oval shaped
• Rectangular (mattress-like)
• Donut (basically round, with center depression)
• Corner fitting (two sides at right angles to fit in a room corner)
• Bolster (Couch-like, raised cushioning around at least 3 sides)
• Burrower style (resembles a bulb, the entrance serves as flap)
Most of these beds are designed with waterproof or water-resistant linings to prevent accidents from damaging (odor and bacteria) the inner cushion. The bed cover is removable and washable, making it easy to maintain. Word to the wise: when washing the cover, I recommend a good detergent with an antibacterial ingredient. Set your washer temperature to cold or lukewarm and your dryer to low heat (or line dry). The reason for these washing/drying instructions is so you can avoid as much shrinkage as possible. A lot of cover shrinkage makes it difficult to get the cushion back in and still retain the bed's natural shape.
You are probably wondering how much is this going to cost? Though there is quite a range of prices, there are some surprisingly affordable dog beds of this type. Depending on the size of the dog, you can start finding this type of bed as low as $35.00 (maybe even a little lower if you run across a sale or discount) and up to around the $200.00 range. Your final cost will be determined by size, features and brand. See my other articles on affordable dog beds.

What to Look For in a Life Jacket For Your Dog
Worried about taking your dog on a water adventure, scared of what could happen if the dog falls overboard?
Ask yourself this question, would you rather be wearing a life jacket if you fell into deep water or not?
I'm pretty sure you would choose to wear some form of buoyancy aid. So what makes you think a dog is any different.
We can be forgiven for believing that dogs are good swimmers and love the water and the same can be said for humans, we just as they cannot all swim. If your dog is on water or near water then it needs to be wearing a dog life jacket.
A dog that falls into water is in serious danger. If its wearing a life jacket for dogs that's a proper size and fit then the risk of drowning or other injury is lowered. There's no shortage of good quality life vests for dogs and pets for you to pick from. Even price should be no problem with many cheap dog life vests now available from amazon and eBay too.
If budget isn't a concern then the variety of pfd's (pet flotation devices) is greatly widened, with many designer dog life jackets in different colors and styles i.e camouflage and polka-dot etc.
The vast majority of dog life vests are float models which contain a buoyant material which is sewn inside the dog vests outer fabric, giving it a padded appearance. Make sure you check the dogs size and weight to ensure this will be sufficient to support the dog whilst in the water.
The other style available from a few manufacturers is the Automatic Pet Float, which contains a pressurized gas cylinder that is activated automatically if the dog falls into the water, the automatic dog life vest is ideal for being less bulky, but if activated requires the fitment of a new gas activation unit. Which adds to this styles maintenance cost (cylinders also have a limited life expectancy).
Price-wise pet vests range from an average cost of $10us to $100us. So there will be a model that will suit everyone's pocket, and hopefully you will never need to use it, but will be very glad you did if the unthinkable happens.
